“The Iron Duke” - British General and Statesman
Created a Duke in 1814, became a Tory Cabinet Minister in 1818 and Prime Minister from 1828-30.
Tacturn and aloof he hid an emotional nature under an icy manner. He cared for the welfare of his men and based his tactics on their steadiness under fire.
They repaid him with their respect and together with the Prussian Marshall Von Blucher they defeated Napoleon and the finest troops of Napoleon’s grande armee at the battle of Waterloo in 1815.
The victories of Nelson and Wellington, coupled with industrial and commercial supremacy made Britain the most powerful nation in the world. Tasmania bears many references to Wellington and his place in history.
